Subject: gay dead fans?

so at the dead show the other night (@ Shoreline) I stumbled upon a group of kids all wearing stickers with dead logos and rainbow triangles inside... So I went up to them and asked what it was all about and they gave me one, but they kinda laughed about it and made it seem like they were just wearing them for fun...? I didn't get it, felt kinda stupid, didn't pursue it very much. Probably should have.

Regardless, there was a guy in patchwork shorts and he was incredibly cute. Damn me for not pursuing.

well, anyway, does anyone know anything about this group?

We got those stickers at the NYE show two years
ago. A cute, but really floaty little hippy boy was
giving them out. I seem to remember all of us
being similarly confused about them. I think Joey
talked to him for a while.

Definitely made me smile...

Used to get steal your face stickers with pink triangles inside the skull, that said "we are everywhere" a long long time ago, like 87-89....

unfortuately i was tripping too much to even know what sex was during that period, so i had not known my full sexual being then enough to find out more or 'come out'...

RE: gay dead fans?

If i recall correctly- I remember my boy talking about
seeing a shirt onlot that he enjoyed. it again- was a
stealie with a pink triangle on the inside- with "Ain't No
Time To Hate" written around the stealie. early 90'2 if
i'm remembering right.

I do not think there really was a gay deadhead group.
quite possibly though.

RE: gay dead fans?

My first friend in San Francisco was part of a
group called "Queer Deadheads" who made
stickers, shirts and met one another though
an old message board on The Well, later on
Dead Net Central. We met as part of that
group and then randomly encountered one
another on the street in front of my apartment,
as my lover at the time was playing Jerry in the
Castro, a very uncommon sound. Anyway, I
used to have some stickers but don't know
where they are anymore. I am very glad to hear
that they are still around!

RE: gay dead fans?

I remember a group of Gay Deadheads back in the early 90's. I was gay but immature at the time and never approached as I found none of them "stunning". There was a very tolerant group of Krishna Heads I fell in with and they had a handful of homos in the group. I took one on as my lover for a bit. He was in charge of the O.G. Ganja Goo-balls. He had an army of folks chanting and rolling Goo-balls. You would get high just rolling them if you didn't use plastic/rubber gloves.

Good to hear the Deadhead group is still in effect. We had a group of about 10 Gay Heads at the San Diego show but I didn't notice any presence from these other fellows.

I once had a rainbow stealie.. I made it though, exacto'd the top
of the skull around the bolt and put it over a rainbow sticker,
looked cool, I dont think it ever atracted to many gay heads tho

RE: gay dead fans?

OK, OK, OK, I 'm old. I WAS a Queer Deadhead. It was
awesome. And such a relief to find those boys after so
many years of touring, hoping and wishing.
Unfortunately, I only was able to see shows with them
for the final two years because, well, hey, I ain't THAT
old (at least in gay life).

There were lots of wonderful guys (mostly from SF) and
seeing shows with those boys was like the first real
release of my life. Dancing, walking around shows
hand in hand and not giving a shit who was looking or
cared is a memory that I'll never forget, especially when
I brought my first gay boy back to my "posse" of straight
friends. What a mindfuck!

One time I actually drove to/from a show with 5 gay
guys. that was a first. The couple in the front seat were
driving and jamming Dead tunes, we were all singing
along and they had to keep turning around and looking
because the three of us in the back seat were all
kissing. OH, SCANDAL! the three way later that night
was amazing.

Seems so silly now to look back on that. It was a great
time back then, but this is just as good, if not bettter.

Please make the most of B&R in these final weeks of
Phish.

RE: gay dead fans?

Hey, what's up guys? I met some of the brian and robert crew for the first time at the Vegas shows, and it was cool, I wish I had had more time to get to know people that weekend. (I thought the shows were great) Now the phish leg of the journey is over, but I happen be a huge fan of the dead, and a few other bands too, widespread panic, string cheese incident, sound tribe sector-9, I definately would feel bad going back to never knowing any other gay people at shows, so I hope some of you kids try to get in touch, I'll be seeing string cheese at the warfield. Any one else an SCI fan?
I hope brian and robert keeps going, and becomes a meeting place for gay fans of live music, not just of phish...
Specifically, to darren who started this thread, I missed shoreline but I am in the bay area, and so are a bunch of the b&r crew, what do you think is a good event to bring some people together to meet at?

Hey Jay and Keith....are you guys camping/moteling it after the shows? I stayed at Lee's campground for the Phish shows earlier this summer and am planning on setting up camp there again. I'm sooo psyched for these string of shows and am looking forward to the lot scene after Phish (which blew in my opinion).

The sty with the pink triangles and the "ain't no time to hate" was a spinoff for a gay deadhead troupe called "Queers for Weir" that were around for a while. I remember encountering them here in SF in the 80's. Not sure how organised or real it was, but they had the t-shirt version of the sticker.

WOW, I can't even believe I found anything about gay Deadheads. I am 26 and I believe that I need to find other gay dead fans. When I think about what makes me happy, I often have some Grateful Dead song in my head. If anyone wants to chat let me know. I live in Indianapolis IN. SNIPSNTYLE@YAHOO.COM
